The University of Regina Rams might not be without starting quarterback Owen Sieben for long after all.
Sieben suffered a scary head injury late in the first half during his team’s season-opening win in Calgary. The setback looked serious enough to spark fears it could be long-term.
“There was a lot going on. They thought it might be more severe than it actually was and we’re happy that he’s OK. We’re treating it as a concussion," head coach Mark McConkey said.
Sieben has been designated by the Rams as "week-to-week” and aren't ruling out the possibility of seeing him again this Canada West season.
Meanwhile, Noah Pelletier takes over as the starting quarterback, indefinitely. He makes his first start of the year against the University of Saskatchewan Huskies Friday night at Mosaic Stadium.
“He’s a starter in this league and he happened to lose his spot last year but I’m glad he came back for this exact reason," McConkey said. "He brought a lot of leadership to the huddle and he had a really good training camp. We know we can win a lot of games with Noah at the helm."
Left-handed QB Trey Jones joins the active roster for the first time ever to back Pelletier up after playing junior football with the Langley Rams in British Columbia last year.
The 1-0 Rams take on the 0-1 Huskies and it's the first matchup in eight years where Regina enters with a better record than Saskatchewan.
The provincial rivalry game can be heard live on 620 CKRM with the pre-game show starting at 6:45 p.m. and kickoff at 7 p.m.
