‘Our defence is one of the best in the nation’: Regina Rams aiming at best start in 22 years

The University of Regina Rams have a shot at going somewhere no Rams team has gone since 2002 this weekend: a 3-0 start.

Ranked No. 10 nationally after impressive wins over Calgary and Saskatchewan to start the season, the Rams will try to take down the 0-2 University of British Columbia Thunderbirds at Mosaic Stadium Saturday afternoon.

The Rams offence has been getting much of the glory, especially after quarterback Noah Pelletier’s record-breaking performance in the win over the U of S. However, many close to the team believe it’s the defensive line who has been the backbone and threatening to do big things this fall.

Tarick Polius is one of those pass-rushers, a Toronto native who agreed to come to Regina this year with the hope of still carving out a pro career. He believes the program has proven to be as advertised and then some.

“It’s thanks to the coaches. Sheldon Gray (defensive coordinator), Kyle Stroeder (defensive line coach) and Derek Lamar (linebackers coach). We do this every single day. They work us, they give us our time and that’s what we should do on the field every day," Polius said. “Our defence is one of the best in the nation.”

In on two quarterback sacks in the last win, Polius promises he and the rest of the Rams defensive line won’t be intimidated by a historically tough UBC offensive line that has produced NFL Draft picks.

“We’re not worried about UBC,” Polius said. “We’re only worried about us.”

As for the great start, he and his teammates like the historical references records and benchmarks the team has set already this season.

“We took it back to the future. What could be better than that?”

Kickoff goes at 2 p.m. from Mosaic Stadium and can be heard live on 620 CKRM with the pregame show set for 1:45 p.m.
