The Indian Head Broncs opened up the newly renovated McCall Field with a 33-6 win over the Broadview Bandits under the newly installed lights.
The McCall Field improvement project was started in the spring of 2023 by the Broncs parents association.
The massive undertaking included new turf on both the game field and practice field, levelling and grading of both surfaces, installing irrigation, re-seeding, installing permanent lights, and most recently, installing re-engineered bleachers with seating for over 400 people. These aluminum bleachers were obtained at an auction in 2017 from Taylor Field and have been in storage until this spring when they were re-engineered into eight free-standing bleachers.
Broncs' head coach Tim Klein explained on the SportsCage how the team used to have to water the field with one oscillating hose that was moved every three hours. That interview is attached to this story.
This entire project has been accomplished by fundraising, applying for grants, corporate sponsors, and private donors, as well as by donating work and materials in kind. The estimated cost of this project is over $300,000, and the Broncs have raised over two-thirds of the funds but still need approximately $100,000 to pay remaining debt and finish the project. The current fundraiser is the Legacy Bleacher seat sale, which is underway. It will help raise much-needed funds and appeal to nostalgic Broncs Football and Roughrider fans, seeing as these bleachers were last used at Taylor Field.
As our most generous sponsor, the game on Friday was dedicated to the Saskatchewan Roughrider Foundation, who donated $42,000 to the McCall Field improvement project.
