HUMBOLDT — The Humboldt Collegiate Institute football team knows it has one more game to play this season – and hopefully more.

The Mohawks fell 48-34 on the road Friday to the Delisle Composite School Rebels. The 0-4 HCI team now waits to see what happens when the Rebels tangle Friday with Martensville High School. That contest will determine who the Mohawks play on Oct. 23 in a conference playoff tilt.

“We’ve improved so much this year,” HCI head coach Cory Popoff said. “We want to put together a good game and hopefully it is not our final one.”

On the road against Delisle, Popoff said the hosts made fewer errors than the Mohawks. The Rebels were able to capitalize on HCI’s mistakes with big plays.

“I thought we improved tremendously from our last game against Delisle,” Popoff said.

Back in Humboldt on Saturday, the Mohawks hosted a junior football jamboree. Popoff said his group, Tisdale Middle and Secondary School, and Melfort and Unit Comprehensive Collegiate had very competitive games. When asked about the importance of these jamborees providing extra snaps for Grade 9 and 10 players, Popoff said:

“It is tremendous. We can’t get better as a team unless we have games like that where they get a decent amount of playing time.”

Basketball

Humboldt’s Aidan Rowe has cracked the roster of the Bridge City team for the Canadian Junior Basketball League. At the opening event of the CJBL season, Oct. 1-3 in Calgary, Bridge City went 2-1.

“[Aidan] played well, notched 16 points and hit three 3-pointers in our last game,” said Bridge City head coach Greg Jockims.

The Bridge City team also includes Kody McGinn of Annaheim. He did not travel to Calgary with the team. The next tournament is in Edmonton, Nov. 5-7.

Senior Girls Soccer

The HCI senior girls soccer team is back on the pitch. The school had not had a program for two years.

“This year is definitely a building year,” coach Teri Tarrant said. “Our focus has been communicating on the field as a team and helping each other out. The girls' attitudes are fantastic on the field and I look forward to continuing this growth into next year's season.”

Senior Boys Soccer

The HCI senior boys soccer team is 2-0-3-0 on the season. The squad is to play in Cudworth on Wednesday. It is the team’s final game before the playoffs begin. Coach Nicole Unrah said the team is seeking to improve its offence.
