HCC prepares to host provincial championship

It's a fairly new event, but the Humboldt Curling Club (HCC) is getting ready to host it. The HCC will be the site of the 2011 Dominion Curling Club Provincial Championship playdown in March.

The Humboldt Curling Club will host the Provincial Curling Championships, also known as the Dominion Championships, March 17-21. Region 9, which includes Humboldt, will be represented by the teams from St. Front, who won the region play downs on February 26. The women's team is comprised of (from left), lead Cassandra Sunderland, second Amber Sunderland, third Ashley Sunderland and skip Lindsey Sunderland.

It's a fairly new event, but the Humboldt Curling Club (HCC) is getting ready to host it.
The HCC will be the site of the 2011 Dominion Curling Club Provincial Championship playdown in March.
This annual event, which is sponsored by the Dominion of Canada General Insurance Company, is being held for only the third time.
This championship is for club teams who have won a spot through club and/or regional playdowns, explained Lois Kalthoff and Laura Jurgens, local co-chairs of the organizing committee for the event.
The event is for curling teams who have always had a competitive urge, but no time to pursue it due to family and work commitments, Kalthoff said.
In 2008, George Cooke, Dominion CEO and recreational curler, had the idea of starting a national championship for regular club curlers, Kalthoff explained.
This isn't for the elite curlers who compete at the national and international levels, but the regular club curler, Jurgens said.
"This will be a thrill for the curlers," said Kalthoff.
There will be opening and closing ceremonies, bagpipes, everything that curlers see at other provincial and national championships, she added.
Each team is only allowed one player who has played in a men's, women's or seniors' provincial or territorial event in the current or previous year, or participated in a Grand Slam event in the current or previous year.
The Humboldt Curling Club did enter both men's and a women's teams into the competition. The Amy Hogemann rink, which includes third Laura Jurgens, second Joy Butler, and lead Carissa Wempe was entered on the women's side and the Aaron Gaudreau rink, which includes of third Scott Gehlen, second Chris Kennedy and lead Regan Schlachter was entered on the men's side.
Unfortunately, both teams lost out at the Regional level, which means neither will make it into the competition in Humboldt
The organizing committee is looking for volunteers to help at the event. Anyone interested can call the HCC, Kalthoff or Jurgens.
The provincial championship will feature 14 men's and 14 women's team from curling clubs across the province. The championship runs from March 17-21 at the Humboldt Curling Club.
A day pass will be $10, while a weekend pass is $20.
