Golf tournament puts money back in Battlefords

It is said a bad day of golf is always better than a good day of work. Thursday was a great day of golf and to top it off money was raised that will be pumped back into the Battlefords.

It is said a bad day of golf is always better than a good day of work. Thursday was a great day of golf and to top it off money was raised that will be pumped back into the Battlefords. It's safe to say the Battlefords United Way Golf Tournament was another great event.

The Battlefords United Way 13th annual Golf Tournament took place at the North Battleford Golf and Country Club and although the numbers were down a bit, the golfers had high spirits and low scores making for a great day on the links.

Some teams made it through nine holes uninterrupted, while others took cover when the thunder and lighting warning horn went off. The clouds produced only a light shower and the rest of the golfers were able to wrap up their rounds.

Coming in with first place honours was the Access Communications team of Martin Smith, Dan O'Connor and two Regina golfers, Trevor Derkson and Les Bagan. The winning team finished with a score of 48 after 18 holes and captured the green jackets.

The support of the community sponsors ensured dozens of prizes were handed out, a great supper provided for the golfers and another great United Way fundraiser on the golf course.

The next major fundraiser for the Battlefords United Way will be BridgeFest Aug. 28. All the money earned from the United Way fundraisers is dispersed to non-profit organizations in the community including the Sexual Assault Centre, Boys and Girls Club, Trade and Educational Centre, Early Childhood Intervention Program, Mental Health Association, Red Cross, National Institute for the Blind, Midwest Food Resource and St. John Ambulance to name a few.
