First Funspiel for Unity Curling Club great success

Curling season starts off with a Funspiel of Sturling curling and Brier Ball in Unity.

UNITY - On Nov. 16, we had our first ever annual Kickoff to Curling Brier Ball Funspiel. The event was well attended with 20 Sturling teams of all ages registered. It was a fun time, lots of laughs and comradery. We started off our draw with four ends of Sturling curling down on the ice surface and then moved upstairs for another four ends of Brier Ball - with a combined score for the winner of the game.

Brier Ball is a game of putting with a golf club, using curling rules, that was created and patented by Keith Heitt. We had excellent sponsorship and congratulations to the Makayla and Rob Bakken, Corinne and David Van De Meutter, Eddie Knorr and Avery Spendelow, Scott Gilbert and Scott Smith, and Ward and Mathew Snell teams for winning a Brier Ball game for themselves to take home. After finishing all the games, we also had great live entertainment in the lounge by Dan Wilgenbusch on guitar and Chad Marfeld on drums.

Our regular Monday/Tuesday league, Wednesday Open league and Thursday Doubles are in full swing. Learn to Curl is already in two weeks and the kids have already improved greatly and are having lots of fun. Our Tuesday/Thursday afternoon league is also in full swing, and curlers are invited to join us if interested. We have the equipment at the club to try it out, free of charge, anytime to see if it’s for you.

School curling is starting up and they are excited for a full season ahead with lots of important events coming up. The club has a full schedule this month and that’s the way we like it. The ice is in tip-top shape as our ice makers are making sure it is always ready for a great curling experience.

Make sure to keep an ear out for some of our upcoming events and possibly a few adult Friday nights learn to curl events. To register your team, call the club or stop by. We invite the public to drop by anytime to enjoy some curling and visiting. Coffee is on every Tuesday and Thursday afternoon at 2:30 p.m.
