Broncos sweep first two games of season

The Humboldt Broncos are two for two after the first games of regular season play, held September 17 and 18.

The Humboldt Broncos are two for two after the first games of regular season play, held September 17 and 18.
Humboldt hosted the Notre Dame Hounds in their home opener at the Elgar Petersen Arena on September 17, then met the Hounds again on their turf the next night.
Though the location changed, the results remained consistent, with the Broncos winning 3-2 in both games.
But it was Notre Dame who started the scoring in the first game of the home-and-home, putting one past Bronco goaltender Andrew Bodnarchuk at 17:21 of the first period of the Broncos' home opener, played in front of a crowd of 765.

That goal seemed to break the scoreless trend for both teams, after a fairly physical first few minutes of play. For, just two minutes later, the Broncos got on the board with a goal by Matt Glowa, assisted by Spencer Braaten and Josh Roach at 19:19.
Humboldt then took a one-goal lead with an exciting goal by Taylor Johnson, assisted by Dayton Shaw and Logan Sproule at 19:56.
Heading into the second period up 2-1, Humboldt strengthened their lead with a power play goal by Braaten, assisted by Nick Keller and Roach, at 7:50.
The Hounds took a while to fire back, but they did manage to add another point to the board in the third period, thanks to a power play goal of their own at 4:26, scored by Austin Lauder, and assisted by Troy Moore and Patrick Thompson-Gale.

After the final whistle, the Broncos were up 3-2, though the Hounds had out-shot the hometown team 29 to 26 over three periods.
The two teams were tied on their power play success, however - Notre Dame was one for eight, and Humboldt, one for seven.
Bodnarchuk, who managed for the most part to keep the puck out of his net despite some heavy pressure from the Hounds at times, was named the first start of the game, while teammate Braaten got third star honours. The Hounds' Brisebois was the second star.
The next night, playing in front of 500 at the Duncan McNeill Arena, home of the Notre Dame Hounds, things were quiet on the scoring side until the third period.
Justin Buzzeo of the Broncos scored the first goal of the night at 1:25 of the third period, assisted by Matt Glowa and Kameron Ballas, on the power play.
Humboldt then made it a 2-0 game with a goal by Glowa, assisted by Buzzeo, at 5:54, again on the power play.

Notre Dame caught up, however, with two goals: one at 9:04, scored by Trevor Cameron, assisted by Trevor Milner, and another at 19:15, scored by Todd Christian, assisted by Milner and Mitch Boucher, on the power play.
But the Broncos this season seem to like last-minute drama, and again took the lead with just five seconds left in the game. Taylor Johnson scored, assisted by Riley Gillies, at 19:55 of the third, to give Humboldt another 3-2 victory.
The Broncos improved on their power play in this game, going two for five, while the Hounds were one for five.
The Hounds were on the high side of shots on goal, with 30 to Humboldt's 16. And though Bronco goaltender Matt Hrynkiw stopped all but two of the 30 shots levelled his way throughout the game, he was not named one of the game's three stars. That went to his teammates, Glowa and Buzzeo, and to Hound Thompson-Gale.
