Tiny homes address Northern housing problems

Métis Nation–Saskatchewan invests $883,000

Tiny homes are being constructed in La Loche through a partnership among Methy Housing Corporation, the village of La Loche, the Saskatchewan Housing Corporation and the MN–S.

LA LOCHE ‑ Twenty residents of the Métis community of La Loche will call a Tiny Home Project home by the end of April.

The project evolved from a consultation begun Feb. 9 between the Métis Nation–Saskatchewan (MN–S) Ministry of Housing and Infrastructure and citizens of the area. During the process citizens expressed a need for housing in a better state of repair and at a reasonable cost.

In response, MN–S partnered with Métis Local No. 39, Methy Housing Corporation, the village of La Loche and the Saskatchewan Housing Corporation, for the La Loche Tiny Home Project. The MN–S investment of $883,000 went toward construction of six of the total 20 affordable, single-dwelling tiny homes in the overall project.

“Our MN–S government works hard to create partnerships to benefit our Métis citizens and communities by addressing homelessness, overcrowding and the challenges of being a single parent," MN–S president Glen McCallum said in a press release.

"By securing safe, affordable housing, the tenants of these tiny homes and our citizens can focus on themselves, their families and their well-being.”

The Methy Housing Corporation and Methy Construction and Maintenance Corporation are not-for-profits owned by the municipality of La Loche.

“Partnerships with the Métis Nation and other governments are the best way to get houses built in our community,” said corporation manager Doug Gailey,

Methy provides the property and project management at the tiny homes.

MN–S engages with all 12 regions in the province to help identify community needs and close gaps that exist in housing and infrastructure, according to a press release. MN-S states a more comprehensive Northern Housing Strategy is being developed to address the housing needs that exist.
