The judges for the Communities in Bloom are coming Aug. 15 and business and homeowners have been busy getting their hands dirty, pulling weeds, mowing lawns, pruning trees and sweeping walkways.

The city of North Battleford is participating in the challenge that focuses on the promotion of green spaces in community settings.

There's still plenty of room for improvement in the city and co-chairperson of the committee, Nora Rongve, is confident that it can be done.

"I want to encourage everyone in the city to step back and have a good look at their space. Do what you can to improve your personal space. (This includes your alleys) If it means just picking some weeds or maybe planting some colour somewhere, own your space and take pride in it," said Rongve.

Judges will evaluate each community on its overall performance in the following criteria: tidiness, environmental action, heritage conservation, urban forestry, landscape, turf and groundcovers, floral displays and community involvement.

A detailed evaluation report will recognize each community's strengths, and provide suggestions for future improvements.

"In order for our city to be a success it must first look successful and it is up to all of us to do our part," Rongve added.

The results, including bloom ratings, criteria award recognitions and winners, will be announced at the National Awards Ceremonies, hosted this year by the National Battlefields Commission Oct. 26 to the 29 in Quebec City, Que.
