Preliminary hearing set for Alex Whitehead's accused killer

Richard Budd is charged with second-degree murder in the New Year's death of Alex Whitehead in Prince Albert

PRINCE ALBERT – A preliminary hearing will be held in January for a man accused of killing 20-year-old Alex Darwin Whitehead on New Year’s Day.

The hearing will determine if there is enough evidence for 21-year-old Richard Budd to stand trial on charges of second-degree murder, aggravated assault, and break and enter with intent to commit an indictable offence. An additional assault charge is scheduled to be spoken to following the preliminary hearing.

Budd was arrested in April in Prince Albert three months after Whitehead's murder.  According to Prince Albert Police, they responded to a home in the 200 block of 13 Street East shortly before 4 a.m. on Jan. 1, 2022, for a weapons call. When police arrived, they found Whitehead suffering from life-threatening injuries. He was taken to Victoria hospital where he later succumbed to his injuries.

Prince Albert Police say their investigation is ongoing.
