The Melfort constituency has seen a change in leadership, but not party.
Kevin Phillips, former mayor of Melfort, was voted in as the Melfort Saskatchewan Party MLA.
"It feels great," said Phillips. "It has been quite an experience."
Phillips took over as the Melfort Sask. Party candidate after Rod Gantefoer stepped away from the political scene because of an illness.
After being voted in, he is now beginning to settle into his office and looking forward to working with his constituents.
"What I would like to do is make contact with all the municipalities of my constituency," said Phillips. "I would like to see if anything is not working for them and where I could be a help."
The biggest concern he has seen in the area is growth, which he is excited about.
"We are looking at growth - the same as what Humboldt and area is looking at (with the opening of places like the BHP mine)," said Phillips. "What a wonderful problem to deal with."
Although he is excited to be in office, he expressed that he does have some learning to do. He already went to Regina to meet with the rest of the party and to go to some workshops to help him learn the rules for MLAs.
Since he was mayor of Melfort for five years, he does have some experience in the political field.
"I think that will help very much," he said.
Phillips believes the key to being a good MLA is to keep his head on straight and follow through with his promises.
"We have to be humble in our service," he said.
