NIPAWIN — The Town of Nipawin is requesting residents voluntarily wear masks in all town owned indoor facilities, following a high incidence of COVID-19 within the community.
The policy change was enacted during an emergency meeting of council on Aug. 31.
This request applies to Centennial and Jubilee arenas, town office and the Evergreen Centre.
All patrons attending the Town of Nipawin community registration night and town open house on Sept. 1 from 5 to 8 p.m. are required to wear a mask.
“Council had conversations about how the numbers have been increasing in Nipawin, and because of the COVID influx they felt it appropriate to take some additional measures – at least until we know a bit more,” said Barry Elliott, Nipawin’s administrator.
“There are conversations that will be going on with the Saskatchewan Health Authority and Public Health to get some accurate information from them on what they’re encountering and what they’re recommending to municipalities regarding COVID restrictions, if any.”
The policy does not apply to commercial businesses in the town, which continue to have the ability to set their own policies regarding mask mandates within the establishments.
As of Aug. 31, there are 76 active cases and four deaths in the North East subzone 1, which includes Arborfield, Aylsham, Carrot River, Choiceland, Codette, Cumberland House, Love, Nipawin, Smeaton, Tobin Lake, White Fox and Zenon Park.
