LANIGAN 鈥� The new K-12 school in Lanigan will not have the accessibility challenges of its predecessors, said Kevin Garinger, Horizon School Division鈥檚 director of education.
Currently in the design phase, the two-story K-12 school is being built to consolidate both the elementary and high school, accommodating up to 400-450 students.
Features planned include a multi-floor lift for students and staff to use as well as accessible gender neutral washroom availability.
鈥淭he high school was a significant challenge in terms of providing access, it didn鈥檛 have the ability or access like this school will to a lift,鈥� Garinger said. 鈥淭he elementary school did have a lift, but we鈥檝e had significant challenges with that because it鈥檚 old.鈥�
He said in the meantime, they鈥檙e making the two older schools 鈥渨ork鈥� with alternatives available, but the new school will be an improvement.
鈥淚t鈥檚 really going to provide opportunities and ensure our children and staff for that matter will have access to any of the locations within the school. The doors will be built such that the accessibility issues are mitigated, so it will meet all the requirements even though it鈥檚 a couple of stories.鈥�
The facility is planned to open in the 2023-24 school year.
