A 61-year-old man is dead following a head-on collision between a car and a semi-trailer unit on Hwy. 5 east of Humboldt on July 20.

A white Chrysler In-trepid was traveling west-bound on Hwy. 5 at around 2 p.m. on that date when, about two kilometres east of Muenster, it crossed the centre line and collided head-on with an eastbound semi-trailer unit.

The semi trailer unit was not hauling cargo at the time, and ran off the road after impact.

The car remained on the highway, on its wheels.

Emergency crews from Humboldt immediately responded to the report of a two-vehicle colli-sion with injuries and arrived at the scene min-utes later.

The driver and lone occupant of the car - a 61-year-old man from Regina - was declared dead at the scene.

The driver of the semi-trailer unit, who was not from the area, was not physically injured in the collision. Humboldt and District Ambulance Ser-vice personnel assessed the second driver and he was released at the scene with no injuries.

Fifteen firefighters with the Humboldt Fire Department responded to the call. No extrica-tion of the victim was required, so they focused their efforts on traffic control and clean-up of the scene.

Weather conditions were overcast at the time and road conditions were good, RCMP reported.

Emergency services from Humboldt, as well as traffic analysts from Lanigan and Saskatoon Traffic Services, there to assist in the investigation, were at the scene of the crash for four hours. The highway was closed in both directions from the time of the crash until after 6 p.m. Traffic was detoured around the scene for that time.

The Humboldt RCMP are continuing to investi-gate the cause of the crash with the assistance of the Provincial Coroner's Office.

The name of the deceased has not been re-leased.
