Construction of the link between the Humboldt Uniplex and the new Humboldt Collegiate Institute, and the renovations inside the lobby areas of the Uniplex is just about done.
Five city staff connected with the city's Leisure Services department moved into their new offices in the link the second week of October. And the new central administration desk area in the combined lobby for the pool, arena and curling rink is fully up and running.
There are a few little loose ends in the construction project that are being tied up right now, noted director of Leisure Services, Darrell Lessmeister last week.
The concession area is 95 per cent complete, Lessmeister said. Its opening remains a moving target, however, as it will rely on getting the finishing touches done, and a health inspection completed.
They are hoping it will be open by the end of the month, Lessmeister said.
The elevator is nearly ready to open to the public, as well. Though usable right now, it is missing a feature that will prevent the elevator from stopping on the upper floor of the curling rink when no one is there.
Until that lock-out is installed, Uniplex staff have to operate the elevator for the public. Once the lock-out is in place, the elevator will be open to public use.
On the upper level of the arena, the wheelchair accessible washrooms are done and ready for public use, as are the main floor washrooms just off the main lobby.
The lobby area is mostly complete, with the exception of the installation of new doors at the main entrance, and another set of doors at the bottom of the stairs to the lower level, which will completely separate the cold and warm temperature zones.
One area that remains unfinished is the fitness centre, which is part of the new link area, just off the new high school.
While the fairly large space with lots of natural light has been roughly finished, there is still no paint on the walls, and it is being used as a construction storage area right now.
The City is currently looking at a joint usage agreement with the new Humboldt Collegiate Institute (HCI) in regard to that space, Lessmeister said.
They are also looking to form a partnership with a private company to outfit and run the fitness area.
They are going to leave it roughly finished until that partner is found, Lessmeister said, so they can take the space in the direction they want to.
