Libraries are supposed to be quiet, just not too quiet, but they can in fact be fun places to be.
The Maidstone Library held their annual meeting in February with board members and a guest from headquarters in North Battleford. The circulation for the branch was down for the last year but no more than the average for the Lakeland Library Region. One of the reasons is books without barcodes haven't been counted since the library systems in the province were more closely linked last year. The Maidstone Library has a large collection of paperbacks and popular novels without barcodes that are popular with patrons.
It was a busy year with programs for all ages and the coming year will offer something for everyone. One of the library's most popular programs is the pre-school story time on Friday at 10 a.m. Mothers have an opportunity to visit and socialize while children three years and up listen to stories, sing, make crafts, share a snack and develop new skills.
The children's winter reading program, "Around the World, After School," begins this week and will run every Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. until April 20. Children will be offered a global adventure through stories, crafts and snacks from around the world.
March 23, the library will be hosting an event at the Seniors' Drop-In Centre. The Ratushniak Elementary school choir will be performing followed by a sing-along. There will be desserts and everyone is welcome to attend.
Plans are also being made for the summer reading program. The theme will be "Splash! Celebrate Summer."
