Lasas to stand trial on second-degree murder charge

Roy Lasas and a young offender were charged in connection to the death of Troy Watson on Mistawasis First Nation in November 2020

PRINCE ALBERT – A Mistawasis First Nation man will stand trial at Prince Albert Court of Queen’s Bench for the death of 36-year-old Troy Watson.

A preliminary hearing for 21-year-old Roy Lasas was held on Aug. 12, which determined there’s enough evidence for Lasas to stand trial on a charge of second-degree murder.

The case has now been sent to Queen’s Bench to determine a trial date.

Lasas, and a young offender who can’t be identified in accordance with the Youth Criminal Justice Act, were charged in January.

According to Shellbrook RCMP, just before 9 p.m. on Nov. 17, 2020, they received a call to assist the local EMS with an unconscious man outside a home on Mistawasis First Nation. The man was pronounced deceased at the scene by EMS.

Saskatchewan RCMP Major Crimes Unit North (MCU-N), Prince Albert and Tisdale RCMP Forensic Identification Services, and the Saskatchewan Coroner’s Service assisted Shellbrook RCMP with the investigation.
