LANIGAN — Construction for the Lanigan and District Water Park has been delayed until 2022.
The town said the delay is due to the high costs of construction material and the timeline needed for the tendering process. The new timeline aims for the park to be opened in summer 2023.
“The tendering process is one of the big ones,” said Kelli Timmerman, Lanigan’s administrator. “The tendering process is not just the tendering because once we get drawings from the bidder, those have to go to council and there’s government procedures.”
In addition, Timmerman said the town isn’t particularly “eager” to start the $2.7 million build this year due to the increased cost of construction materials, which is estimated to cost an additional 30 per cent of the total project.
The current Lanigan pool was built in 1971. Issues with the pool include cracked concrete, the filtration and disinfection system is not sufficient enough to keep a paddling pool open, limited circulation system, as well as a minimum entry of three feet, creating a challenge for smaller children.
Earlier this year, the Lanigan and District Water Park Project received around $1.1 million from the federal government and $926,000 from the province for the build. The remaining $741,000 plus any costs of inflation is to be funded by the municipality and other sources.
