Turtleford's Main Street was closed off to traffic Sept. 17 so 18 booths could be set up for the second annual KidsFest.
According to Jennifer Blais, festival creator and co-ordinator, the purpose of the festival is to teach children entrepreneurial skills. Therefore the majority of booths are not only operated by youth but the products are made by them as well.
For example, many booths had baked goods that were made by children - with the slightest assistance. Other booths displayed artwork, vegetables from the garden or toys children were ready to part with.
Of course, there were a few adult run activities, like face painting, a petting zoo, a potter's wheel and pony rides. But these, again, were focused on youth as well as contributing to a fun, country fair atmosphere.
Although the overall purpose of the event is to encourage children to engage in business and have fun, the Turtleford KidsFest serves a second function in that it is a fundraiser for the local library.
So either way, whether viewed as a business venture or as a fundraiser, this fun event benefits the community.
