When walking down Main Street in Humboldt, people may notice that something is a little different.
The local committee Communities in Bloom has started to paint the fire hydrants down Main Street to look like Humboldt Broncos hockey players.
The project was initiated a year and a half ago, said Janice Ruedig from Communities in Bloom.
"We were looking for some way to spruce up the fire hydrants," said Ruedig.
After some consideration, they decided to paint Broncos' jerseys on the hydrants, in honour of both Hockeyville and the national Junior A championship the Broncos will be hosting in May 2012.
"We wanted to do something to capture that (hockey) spirit," said Ruedig.
They asked Rob Muench to design a template for the hydrants and took the plan to city council, who approved the request.
They also had to run the idea past the Humboldt Fire Department, who agreed with the idea, but had one request.
"That is why we had to keep the tops and sides red - they are that colour so the fire department knows what tools to use on the hydrant," said Ruedig.
After coming up with the plan, they needed volunteers to paint the hydrants.
"The Conexus staff decided to take it on as a volunteer project," said Ruedig.
They took two evenings and one afternoon to paint the hydrants.
The hydrants are not finished yet. Communities in Bloom ordered some Humboldt Broncos decals to put on the front of the hydrants and hope to put player's numbers on the backs.
"They will hopefully be finished up before he RBC Cup," said Ruedig.
