Humboldt District Hospital Foundation receives $18,000 boost from two donors

HUMBOLDT — The Humboldt District Hospital Foundation has received a $18,000 boost from two large donations.

Wayne Kunz and Stacey Fowler presented the foundation with a $15,000 donation, aimed towards a new $18,000 surgical microscope used to insert tubes into the ears of child patients.

Lorrie Bunko, the foundation’s executive director, said the pair learned of the microscope when the foundation made an appeal for donations back in June.

“They saw the need,” she said.

Having the microscope means that families won’t have to travel to larger centres to get the procedure done, which means they don’t have to spend money on travel costs like fuel, food and lodging.

Bunko said in June she’s been told the estimated demand for the procedure is three to four times a month – with potential for that to grow.

It’s now up to the Saskatchewan Health Authority to go through their process to order the surgical microscope, the executive director said.

The foundation also received $3,009 from HSA Chartered Professional Accountants. Each year, the accounting firm donates $1 from every personal tax return they file to the foundation.

“That's a huge help to us,” Bunko said. “What we really appreciate is that HSA thinks of us year after year after year, and the reason why they're doing it is to give back to the communities in which they serve and to their clients – and healthcare serves everyone.”

Over the last eight years, HSA has donated a total of $21,968 to the foundation. HSA’s donations are not targeted at any specific piece of equipment.

Bunko said the foundation and the health care facility is fortunate to receive the dedicated support that they get from residents and businesses and throughout the district.

“We would not have what we have today – and in these times – without that support.”
