The story of Pine Island Suites is a success story, a story of caring and a story continuing into the future.
In 2008 volunteers purchased and began renovating Maidstone's former Pine Island Lodge long term care facility. They raised over $100,000 and with donated labour and intelligent purchasing they were able to create a safe, comfortable home for local seniors.
The suites are now fully occupied and guests enjoy excellent food, frequent musical entertainment, in house socializing and an opportunity to continue to live independently. There is a "first come, first served" policy and a current waiting list, but more names are always welcome.
This fall work will continue on an overnight suite, the garage and kitchen flooring.
With full occupancy regular costs are being met and some is being set aside for emergency repairs and general upkeep, but there are three major projects that will need attention in the future.
The heating system and air exchanger are almost 50 years old and will need to be updated with higher efficiency technology. There will need to be work done on the flat tarred roof and the dining room windows will need to be replaced.
An auction fundraiser will be held at the Waseca Community Hall Oct.15 with supper and a bar. Over 100 items will be available for auction including volunteer slaves and Bruce McFadyen's memorial birdhouses numbered 9,999 and 10,000.
