MELFORT — Over the first weekend of February five boxes of frozen meat were stolen from the Melfort Food Bank loading dock, including 15 chickens, hams and steaks.
Ellen Zuck, secretary with the organization, said that they were using the loading dock to store the frozen meat in the subzero temperature while they made room inside the freezers.
“It was cold outside so we thought, usually nobody bothers,” Zuck said. “It had been out there maybe a few days. I’ve had different stuff out there in the past, I’ve had bread out there and I’ve had empty boxes piled up waiting for recycling.”
Zuck said that if she could give a message to whoever had taken the food, it would be that if they wanted the food they could have just asked.
“We would have shared with you because that’s what we do, that’s what the food bank does, and if you took it just because you could? I guess shame on you, because I don’t know who would steal from a food bank.”
The Melfort Food Bank is open every Wednesday for donations from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. at 201 Broadway Avenue North. They can be contacted at 306-752-4448
Over the best winter, Zuck said they’ve been doing alright for donations, but the theft disappointed them.
“We’re always struggling to get food and then we get a little bit and somebody comes along and takes it— we were very sad.”
