The Humboldt Journal is once again handling the Humboldt and District Citizen and Junior Citizen of the Year awards, and the deadline for nominations in December 2 - which is coming up fast.
These awards were previously handed out by the Humboldt and District Chamber of Commerce (HDCC) as part of their Mark of Excellence awards every year.
However, the HDCC decided to hand them off last year, and the Journal stepped up to the plate.
"Last year, we took it on because we are the newspaper of record for Humboldt and area, and there are a lot of people who contribute to the community that need to be recognized for what they do to make the community great," said Brent Fitzpatrick, group publisher for the Humboldt Journal and East Central Trader.
The one thing that changed about the awards this year is that the deadline for nominations moved from January to December. This will allow the Humboldt Journal to announce the winner of the award in the first edition of 2012.
The criteria for the awards is simple.
The Humboldt Citizen of the Year is "an adult who, through volunteer efforts, has enhanced the lifestyle of the residents of Humboldt and area."
And the Junior Citizen of the Year award is meant to mark the significant contributions to the community by a youth or young adult aged 30 or under.
Who should be nominated?
"People that have given selflessly in our community to make it a better place," Fitzpatrick stated.
The winner of the Citizen of the Year award will be chosen by a committee made up of past winners, staff of the Humboldt Journal and the City of Humboldt has been asked to send a representative, noted Fitzpatrick.
JCI Humboldt will once again be assisting with the selection of the Junior Citizen of the Year.
"I just think it's a good thing to be a part of because we are a junior club always looking for members and promoting the community. It just fits," said Tyrell Bjarnason, president of JCI Humboldt.
Nomination forms can be found in the Humboldt Journal every week, or at City Hall or the Humboldt and District Chamber of Commerce Office.
