An 84-year-old driver has been charged with proceeding from a stop sign when unsafe after a collision in Humboldt last week.
On October 24 at approximately 8:30 p.m., emergency crews were called to the scene of a two-vehicle collision on Hwy. 5 near 4th St. in Humboldt.
An 84-year-old female driver in a Ford Taurus, southbound on 4th St., stopped at the stop sign at Hwy. 5, reported Const. Shayn Olsen with the Humboldt RCMP.
Not seeing any vehicles approaching, she drove her vehicle into the intersection, directly into the path of a Mazda3 driven by a 17-year-old male from Humboldt.
Though the female driver tried to speed up to get out of the path of the Mazda, the Mazda hit the Taurus on its driver door.
Emergency crews from Humboldt and District Ambulance Service and the Humboldt Fire Department responded to the collision report.
Nine firefighters were at the scene extremely quickly, noted Fire Chief Norbert LeBlanc, as they had been gathered at the fire hall for a practice session.
Firefighters had to use the Jaws of Life to remove the door from the Taurus, and they assisted ambulance crews in removing that driver from the vehicle.
Both drivers were lone occupants in their vehicles, and received only minor injuries in the collision. Both were taken to Humboldt District Hospital and later released.
