Cost of a designated driver not as steep as alternatives

With the Christmas season now in full swing the RCMP is reminding people getting a designated driver is certainly worth it.

In a message, Sgt. Ron Russell of RCMP Wynyard Detachment says the answer to the question "what's the cost of a designated driver during the holiday season?" can be summed up in the words "not much."

However, the price of not having one can include a trip to a police station, a night in jail, a 24-hour driving suspension, a 30-day driving suspension for new drivers, an additional 90-day driving suspension before court, a 30-day vehicle impoundment with storage costs, at least one trip to court and lawyers fees averaging up to $5,000 - all this before a conviction.

Those convicted, can expect a minimum of a $1,000 fine, a one-year driving prohibition, possible unemployment if you can't drive, hassles from your boss, friends, family and spouses, and a criminal record that may cause you difficulties getting to Disneyland, a lifetime of misery if you've injured or killed someone, embarrassing employment and volunteer criminal record checks, insurance likely won't be paying for any damage or injuries from a vehicle accident if you're over the limit and, finally, possible jail time.

The message the RCMP sends is "get a designated driver - it's worth it."
