Contracts for construction of two new Battlefords Residential Services Inc. group homes in the Battlefords has been awarded to Lyle V. Schell Construction Management Ltd.
According to a BRSI press release, construction is to begin immediately with completion targeted for the fall of 2012.
The new 3,548 square foot home being constructed at 1731 - 102nd St. has been designed to meet the complex needs of individuals with limited mobility. Five existing BRSI clients will be relocated to the home once it has been completed.
The second home will be located at 2431 Kildeer Dr. and will provide a quality home for five individuals who are currently on the Ministry of Social Services' 440 Wait List. In addition, this home will also have one respite space and two one-bedroom basement suites for individuals who require the assistance of BRSI's Supported Living Program.
Once these two houses are complete and the individuals have moved into their new homes BRSI will renovate one existing group homes.
The construction of these two new homes and the renovation of existing facilities have been made possible through a partnership between BRSI and the Ministry of Social Services. The total cost of the projects will be $1.8 million comprised of a capital grant of $750,000.00 from the Ministry of Social Services, a mortgage through Innovation Credit Union, BRSI reserve funds and donations from community minded people like Glenn Hornick and family.
"The board of directors appreciates all the support the community has given to the organization over the past 25 years," the press release states.
"We will be asking for the communities continued support over the next few months to help make these buildings a home for our family members. We will be initiating a fund raising campaign to help purchase items such as furnishings, window coverings, appliances and adaptive equipment for use in our homes."

BRSI currently provides care and support for 43 family members in five homes and Supported Living Program throughout the community.
