Community minded citizen, Gerald Gratton, approached city council Monday night and voiced his concerns about what he described as unsafe conditions at the Borden Crescent Park.
For the safety of the children, Gratton would like to see a fence put up along the back alley to protect them from running out into traffic while playing in the park. He also pointed out that there are boards that need to be replaced to prevent slivers.
Gratton had a petition signed by himself and approximately 80 other people in the neighbourhood who would like to see improvements made to the park. That was in 2009, and since then one three-foot board has been replaced.
"I have seen, at other parks in the city, a lot of playground equipment made of wood; like walking bridges and swing sets, and they are very safe. What is in the park now is nice and well kept, we are just asking for more," said Gratton, adding he would also like to see a swing set put in and more equipment suitable for small children.
Councillor Grace Lang commended Gratton for his involvement in the community,
"I think that it not only speaks to his own credibility, but it also helps to build safe communities. I think he's speaking for a lot of people, not just himself."
City council agreed that would take a closer look at the situation at Borden Crescent Park and consider addressing concerns surrounding the park in the 2012 budget.
