A total of 150 calming installations will be permanently constructed in 39 neighbourhoods in the city of Saskatoon with the project eyed for completion before the end of summer.
According to a release from the City of Saskatoon, the pedestrian safety project comes after years of careful study made through the Neighbourhood Traffic Reviews and other traffic safety assessments that hope to address community concerns.
Curb extensions, median islands, and location-specific solutions are some of the calming installations that will be built to improve safety in residential areas. The said construction projects are now being done along with road repairs and the city is asking motorists to be patient.
The city received $3.325 million from the Saskatchewan Municipal Enhancement Program with the money to be used for the said projects in neighbourhoods. The funding was part of the MEEP’s $35.5 million grant to the city to help stimulate the province’s economy and recovery after the COVID-19 pandemic.
In other news, the Recreation and Community Development Department has announced that all leisure centres and outdoor pools are again open to the public after the Saskatchewan Health Authority lifted all health restrictions in the province.
However, all staff under the RCDD and those working in leisure centers will continue to follow the safety protocols like wearing masks and practicing social distancing as the city continues to prioritize health and safety. Customers may or may not wear masks, and those who feel more comfortable wearing masks are still welcome provided they remove them when using the pool and participating in aquatic activities.
The facilities that are now open are the Holiday Park Wildwood and Silverwood golf courses, Saskatoon Forestry Farm Park & Zoo, and play programs and paddling pools. All leisure facilities are now also open for private and public facility rental opportunities.
