Battlefords RCMP will be increasing enforcement efforts to concentrate on drivers who insist on using hand held devices while driving, according to a press release this week.
Legislation in Saskatchewan bans the use of hand held cell phones while driving and prohibits all drivers from using them to talk, text, e-mail or surf the Internet while operating a motor vehicle. RCMP and emergency services are exempt from the rule, as they are not properly equipped at this time to operate multiple Bluetooth systems in one vehicle.
Violations of the law will result in a fine of $280 plus four demerit points under the Safe Driver Recognition and Driver Improvement Programs. Police can also seize a cell phone. Drivers who use their cell phones out of direct view can also be charged, for driving without due care and attention.
Police want remind drivers, "Their full attention needs to be on the task at hand, not looking down at their laps," according to the release.
