A man noted for his voice was almost speechless at last week's Living Sky School Division School Board meeting when a fellow board member recommended nominating him for a prestigious award.
The Living Sky School Division board is planning to nominate long time member Roy Challis for this year's Saskatchewan School Boards Association Award of Distinction. First presented in 2003, it is now presented annually to a current or former school board member who has demonstrated outstanding service and made a significant contribution to enhance education on local and/or provincial levels.
Fellow board member Glenn Wouters brought the matter to the board's attention.
"I thank you for that," Challis said, but he suggested his contributions paled alongside others.
Wouters said, "You have exuded all these characteristics at all our board meetings," referring to the criteria of showing commitment to public education and advocating on its behalf, being a leader of positive change and proponent of achievement for students, and, as a board member, demonstrating effective governance, commitment, advocacy, ethics and participation in professional development.
"It's an honour to be considered by the rest of the board," he said.
Challis, a long time local school board member, served from 2006 to 2009 as president of the Saskatchewan School Boards Association.
A former high school teacher, he has also practiced as a writer, director, actor, producer and teacher of theatre arts around the Battlefords area for over 40 years. He has been associated with the Saskatchewan Drama Association since the late 70's and has been awarded many acting and characterization awards.
