The Better Business Bureau of Saskatchewan is the latest in a long line of authorities warning people against a computer servicing scam operating in Saskatchewan.
In a news release issued August 12, they continue to receive frequent calls from consumers who mistakenly complied with callers alleging to represent Microsoft, Apple, Dell and more recently Bomgar Corporation. The scam typically operates with a caller identifying themselves as being a representative of a legitimate company, indicating the consumer has a serious security or virus issues on their home computer. According to the BBB, far too many consumers have complied with the callers sales pitch and requests for credit card information, to the tune of upwards of $2000.
The News-Optimist has received similar stories from readers complaining that they have received similar phone calls from those identifying themselves as being from computer companies, seeking information over the phone. BBB is warning that this scam has been active in Canada since March 2010, and even longer in Europe and Australia.
They are warning the public that allowing third party access to your computer over the internet is not recommended under any circumstances and could lead to identity theft.
BBB is recommending the following:
Never resopiond to a telephone solicitation that offers to provide computer online services from any company regardless of the name provided.
Keep anti-virus software up to date and run virus scans regularly.
Do not give out credit card or any other personal information in response to a thirdparty call offering online services.
If you are concerned about performance issues, identify local reputable service providers and look for the BBB accreditation, and contact multiple sources for pricing information.
If you have any doubt about any telephone or email solicitation offering online computer servicing or other service, call the Better Business Bureau before you act.
