A happy story from the North

Saskatchewan's RCMP has a centralized distribution system for sending information to the media.

Through this system I receive e-mail everyday, chronicling everything from stolen gas at Gull Lake to fatal highway crashes. Recently especially disturbing e-mail arrived chronicling a clash between RCMP in the north and an angry mob.

The following story also comes from a northern detachment, and is of a truly rare nature.

Read on.

KaydenCrane is a four-year-old boy from the community of Cumberland House Cree Nation. Two years ago Kayden was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia which is a form of leukemia which destroys white blood cells. Kayden has been receiving chemotherapy treatments in Saskatoon once a month for the past two years. The treatments have had success and hopefully his last treatment will be in September of 2012.

The members of Cumberland House detachment wanted to keep Kayden's spirits up during his treatment and decided to make him "Sergeant for a Day."

From all accounts, and with apologies to Sgt. Dave Brunner, Cumberland House never ran smoother than when Kayden was in charge! Kayden and the entire community of Cumberland House were excited for Kayden during this special day.

For working the day, Kayden received an RCMP hoodie and baseball cap. His duties included inspecting the detachment and touring the community in the police truck. Judging by the smile on Kayden's face i, he really did enjoy his shift.
