Seventy-five individuals gathered in the Blaine Lake Composite School gymnasium to celebrate Blaine Lake's 63rd consecutive Remembrance Day service since the ending of World War II.
Honour Guard consisted of Cpl. Nicole Zdimalova, Paul Keryliw, Weslie Nemish and Garrett Woytiuk. Upon the entrance of the colour party, everyone rose and remained standing for the singing of O Canada led and accompanied by Diana Woytiuk on piano.
Chairperson Vivian Nemish acknowledged Second World War veteran Raymond Bold who was in attendance; Walter Hollick, cousin to BL veteran Tom Hollick; and Trooper Robert Pearson, son/stepson of Paul and Gillian Pearson who are current residents of Blaine Lake. Trooper Robert Pearson lost his life in Afghanistan in 2008.
Pastor Kevin Koop pronounced the opening prayer followed by Kitty Larson presenting greetings on behalf of the Town of Blaine Lake.
Garrett Woytiuk and Jennifer Weber recited the roll call honouring veterans from 1914-1918 and 1939-1945, respectively.
Community associations and business representatives had the opportunity to lay wreaths prior to The Last Post.
The BLCS elementary choir paid tribute to the veterans with song. The Honour Guard led the guests to the cenotaph for a brief service and the laying of the wreaths.
Blaine Lake was very honoured to have the Pearson family of Paul, Gillian and Olivia pay tribute to Trooper Robert Pearson with the laying of a fresh bouquet of flowers and a handmade wreath. It was an emotional tribute as many individuals wiped away tears, imagining the loss and emptiness that accompanies a family with military connections.
Everyone was invited to reunite at the gymnasium for a light lunch and fellowship.
The service continues to grow in attendance annually and it was refreshing to see the many young faces participating and in attendance. Congratulations to the Remembrance Day committee organizers for providing an opportunity for the community to honour the veterans.
