The Borden 4-H Light Horse Club held a fundraiser event in the Borden Community Centre Feb. 23, with over 150 on hand to enjoy a roast beef supper served by the Borden Lions Club and to listen to an evening of cowboy poetry and musical talent, along with bidding on 58 items up for silent auction. The proceeds from the supper and program were to go to Curtis Crabb and Dave Weiland, who are both having health issues and can no longer work. The silent auction proceeds went to the 4-H club.
The 4-H members cleared tables and then master of ceremonies Barry Thiessen had them recite the 4-H pledge. Barry and Mona read God Made a Cowboy and The Cowboy's Wife. The first cowboy poet to recite his work was Marvin Auseth from northwest of Swift Current.
Jody Giesbrecht, who lives in the CP station house, played guitar and sang a number of songs, along with playing the harmonica for other songs. Brian Anderson of Hazlet recited his poetry about ranching along with telling jokes in between. Adam Thiessen, who lives near Petrofka Bridge, read his poetry about horses he has ridden, mule packing in the mountains and a poem, 39 and Counting, about horses that have bucked him off. Barry read a poem Mona had written, Just a Cowboy.
The leather western theme candleholders on the tables went to someone at each table, whoever had a note under their chair. Brian and Marvin each did a bit more of their poetry then Melissa Saunders read all the silent auction winners. Door prizes went to Jacqueline Plaunt, Glenn Sutherland, Brian and Darcy Yaseniuk, Gerry Penner, Rod Andrews, Nigel Cutting, Madison Thiessen, Paul Mageira, Dorothy Fouhy, Doris Zmood, Laura Unruh, Ruby Wall, Dawson Lehman, Dan Gunsch, Ann Janzen and Phyliss Domashovitz.
Barry thanked all those businesses and individuals who had donated the auction items, the Lions Club for the great meal, Borden School for the use of their tablecloths and the Model T Bar and Grille for providing accommodation for Marvin and Brian.
The Crown Hill 4-H Beef Club will be holding their local speak-offs March 3, at the Blaine Lake School gym, starting at 1 p.m. The Borden 4-H Light Horse members will hold their speak-offs the evening of March 3, starting at 6 p.m. in the Borden School gym.
Condolences are extended to the families at Radisson of Joyce Stott, who passed away Feb. 18 at the age of 82, and of Willie Ferris, who passed away Feb. 20 at the age of 88. There is no funeral service planned for Joyce Stott and Willie Ferris's service was held Feb. 23 in Radisson Lutheran Church with the Royal Purple providing the lunch at the hall.
