Fiddles will be swinging.
The Scott Woods Show - "Swingin' Fiddles" is making its way across Canada and will come to the Humboldt Legion on Friday, May 17.
Woods and his band will revive the music of the '30s, '40s and '50s in his two-hour old-time show, incorporating western swing, big band, pop standards, country, gospel and old-time fiddling.
"We've taken the old swing music and have rewritten the songs for three fiddles for three-part harmonies," Woods said over the telephone from northern Ontario. "It's very smooth with very rich melodies."
Woods is a sixth generation fiddler and multiple winner of the Canadian Open and Grand Masters Fiddle contests. He now travels the country continuing his family tradition of old-time music started by his father and The Merv Woods Orchestra in 1950.
Woods has toured across Canada more than 30 times, but said his love for music keeps the trip from becoming stagnant.
"It's the high and adrenalinethat musicians chase," he said quite honestly. "It's not for the money. It's certainly for the music."
The Scott Woods Show has performed in Humboldt in previous years, but Woods said this year's show would be different, featuring new talent and flair.
"Our show changes entirely every single year," he said. "It's a very fun, upbeat show.
"We've brought the type of show that you would see if you went to a big theatre in Saskatoon to small rural communities."
The Humboldt show will be a fundraiser for the local Legion, and will include singing, fiddling, step dancing and comedy. Wood's famous trick fiddling, which earned him the Canadian Novelty Fiddle Championship and nickname "the flippin' fiddler", will top off the show, he said.
"You can't get what we play on the radio stations. It really speaks grassroots right through," he said.
"People should really take a chance and check us out. You don't have to be a fiddle fan to enjoy the show, it's for everybody."
Joining Scott on the road for the second leg (May 3 to June 27) of the tour will be: Carolyn Woods, Wes Dymond, Emily Yarascavitch and Ben Norris.
