The Battlefords are buzzing this coming week. Not only has spring tentatively arrived, there are events for art and music lovers, and a day to say "no" to bullying.
For art lovers, there is a new exhibit at the Chapel Gallery in North Battleford. The work of Mervin potter Jay Kimball is on display in the Windows Salon from now until April 28. The artist says, "Most of these artworks incorporate hundreds of steps or stages before they were finished." The exhibit opened with a reception last week.
Wednesday, April 10 marks the International Day of Pink, a day when communities across the country, and across the world, can unite in celebrating diversity and raising awareness to stop homophobic, transphobic and all forms of bullying.You can recognize the day by wearing pink, and if you head out to the Battlefords Co-op Aquatic Centre, you can attend a barbecue between noon and 2 p.m. or 4 p.m. and 7 p.m., weather permitting. Proceeds from the barbecues will go to the Red Cross. Anti-bullying balloon releases are also planned for 2 p.m. and 7 p.m.
Friday, April 12 will be a performance by the Battlefords Children's Choirs at the Dekker Centre. Let the Children Sing! is the name the performance by the Battlefords Children's Junior and Preparatory Choirs and by the Kamala Youth Choir, directed by Dianne Gryba and JoAnne Kasper. The show gets underway at 7 p.m. The Battlefords Children's Choirs program was established in 2001 and has grown to almost 75 choristers.
Early Saturday morning, April 13, the Battlefords Mayors' Prayer Breakfast will be presented by the Battlefords Ministerial Association. This year's keynote speaker will be Barret Kropf, chaplain for the Saskatchewan Roughriders. Breakfast is at 8:30 a.m. at the Western Development Museum in North Battleford.
Also on Saturday, April 13, and again on Sunday, April 14, is a SIDS Fundraiser Bake Sale and Raffle being held at the Co-op Territorial Place Mall and at the Frontier Mall. There will be a draw on Sunday at 5 p.m. All proceeds will go toward Sudden Infant Death research.
Denholm is celebrating spring with their Spring Fling on Saturday, April 13 featuring a roast beef supper with all the trimmings, plus entertainment by the Svoboda Dancers, the Three Gents and Leo Brennan. If you haven't got your ticket yet, remember only 100 are available. It is sponsored by the Denholm Community Rec Club. Posters around the Battlefords will provide information on the several ways you can get your tickets.
