Years of service to housing authority recognized

Well I have to confess. I actually just got a pair of new glasses - yes, transitions at that - but I have to admit they don't work much better than my old ones.

Well I have to confess. I actually just got a pair of new glasses - yes, transitions at that - but I have to admit they don't work much better than my old ones. Last week I looked at the calendar and I saw the day for the Thanksgiving Supper and my glasses told me the wrong date. The real date is Oct. 12 at the Rabbit Lake Community Hall.

One thing about making a mistake is you find out how many people read the Rabbit Lake news and from this mistake I can say that it is many!

Condolences go out to Collette Cooper and to Jack on the passing of her mother.

Congratulations go to Clifford Smith who has served on the Rabbit Lake Housing Authority from 1995 until 2012. At the monthly potluck of the Rabbit Lake seniors, Naomi Unger, housing authority secretary, presented Clifford with an engraved clock to recognize his years of service.

Harvest is progressing really well with day after day of beautiful fall weather. One field of interest is the field donated by Gordon and Norma Sherman to the Rabbit Lake and District Museum.

As many know, the museum committee is planning on moving the old Rose Gill Hospital from its original site to the museum grounds. This is a costly undertaking. This spring the Shermans decided to donate the crop off of 110 acres to this cause. The inputs and the work have been done by many individuals and companies. A sign recognizing these contributions is posted at the field on the Mullingar grid. Gordon estimated the canola was running at about 40 bushels to the acre.

The Rabbit Lake branch of the Lakeland Library hosted a cultural day at the Rabbit Lake Community Hall Sept. 28. Lavonne Dyck and Barb Janzen from Glenbush taught kids and adults how to do paper marbelling, Norman Sherman showed knitting, Shelly Laughlin did counted cross-stitch and embroidery, Lynn Morrison helped people try machine quilting and Donna German was doing sewing. Over past art classes the kids made piñatas and this was the day to actually break them and enjoy the spoils.

This program was made possible through a federal grant and many people enjoyed the day. Some comments regarding what culture means were, "Culture is what unites our differences: singing, food, dancing, clothes and religion; and "Culture is part of oneself, part of our background, part of one's habits." All in all it was a great day.

Hopefully, by the next Rabbit Lake news, all the crop will be in, all the farmers will have had a safe harvest and we will be ready to begin fall activities.
