Winter Spirit Week enjoyed by students

Life seems to get busier and time seems to fly by. Christmas is behind us and we are creeping up on Valentine's Day. The one thing that doesn't seem to want to fly by is winter.

Life seems to get busier and time seems to fly by. Christmas is behind us and we are creeping up on Valentine's Day. The one thing that doesn't seem to want to fly by is winter. With the early start to winter and the many blustery days we seem to be having lately, winter seems to be hanging on tight. The drastic changes in temperatures from one day to the next are bringing in weather that is creating treacherous driving conditions, cancelling buses and making most want to jump on a plane and fly away to anywhere but here. We keep going though, with hope that spring will surprise us early.

Norman Carter's Student Leadership Council organized a Winter Spirit Week for the students Jan. 21 to 24. The week of fun helped break up the monotony of the weather for the kids. Each day, a different activity was held either in the classroom or around the school.

Monday was Dress like a Snowman Day, where snow-themed activities were done in classrooms and a dodge ball tournament started.

Tuesday was Pyjama and Hot Chocolate Day where the students wore their warm pyjamas to school and competed in a silent game of Sleeping Elves that was judged by SLC members. Hot chocolate was served to all as a warm winter treat.

Wednesday was Winter Olympics Day. The students dressed in their hockey jerseys, or any other sports attire and participated in games with their class, rotating through different activities set up in the gym; snowball toss, draw to the button, puck shoot, and blizzard relay.

Thursday was Crazy-haired Athlete Day with outdoor winter activities going on around the school yard; broomball, tug of war, toboggan races and coloured snow art. The day ended with the championship games of dodge ball against the teachers. Friday was the perfect end to the wonderful week with a PD holiday for the students.

The Wilkie hockey teams are busy. The regular season is starting to wrap up with a few games left, and preparations are underway as teams get ready to head into provincials. Tournaments are also going on in town and neighbouring communities, keeping families busy. So if you feel like getting out of the house and braving the cold, there are plenty of opportunities to take in a game and cheer on our local players.
