Damage from the windstorm that passed through this area on Thursday is being cleaned up, as the town workman goes about picking up branches and miscellaneous items that have left home and are lost. In Alberta it was even worse as power poles were even broken off as the wind whipped the wires to topple the poles.
A semi blown over, closed the highway south of Leduc, Alta. and traffic was rerouted through Wetaskiwin for a while. Rooftops that left or crumbled were common and when we drove to Edam that afternoon we saw two hopper-bottom grain bins toppled over, just north of Cavalier. I assume they were empty, because the rest in the row of bins were still standing. The new building going up at the south end of Edam has the rafters up and luckily didn't have the plywood sheathing on yet, or it may have been a different story. There are reports that the fish shacks on Murray Lake are in bad shape as they are frozen in and the tops of many have scattered. I expect it's the same story on Jackfish Lake. There are about two dozen on the lake by Meota, giving it the appearance of a small village out there.
A motorist was reported by several drivers, as driving erratically, on Highway 2 between Edmonton and Calgary. They could see he was watching a television, set up on the dash of the car. With the light from it showing, it wasn't hard to find him. The police soon put an end to his show. I wonder what his fine would be.
Those long white bags where farmers have stored grain are being damaged by both deer and snow machines. One would expect man to know better but the deer are happy to find a handy trough, and the holes keep getting bigger and bigger.
RoseMarie Nyholt from Metinota Beach, and a friend from Saskatoon flew to Huatulco, Mexico where she attended the lovely sunny wedding of her granddaughter Alexa Gossard and Kyle Batsel, from Medicine Hat, Alta. It was a warm holiday spent with many family members. They went out on a catamaran to cruise the shoreline, passing seven bays, stopping at one where some folks tried snorkelling. The one surprise they saw was a huge turtle, at least 48 inches across, swimming out in the ocean. RoseMarie left Dec. 31 returning Jan. 8 at 3 a.m. as their flight had been delayed on account of the winter storms.
Two of my grandsons are competing in skiing, in the Alberta Winter Games being held at Norquay, Alta. near Banff.

Saturday morning, 15 to 20 folks showed up at 10 a.m. for the shuffleboard tournament. Everyone took part in, trading off their turn to another, so all played at least one game. Couples with the highest scores were first Linda Ard and Sven Christiansen, tied for second were the teams of Cora Christiansen and Beulah Corbiel and Lorna Pearson and Maureen Campbell, third place were Yvonne Mackereth and Arlene Walker and fourth were John Stewart and Joyce Antoine. A delicious dinner was set out with a tasty pot of soup and kettle of chicken and dumplings, plus cold plate items of all kinds and several desserts so no one went home hungry.
The sudden blizzard that passed through the Battleford's area Sunday evening was a surprise to all who were on the road at the time. Those out there say it was the worst blizzard they've ever had to contend with yet. It brought in colder temperatures with it.
Winner at Contract Bridge at the Do Drop In Monday evening was Robert Iverson and second was Judy Iverson.
