White Gift Sunday benefits Interval House

Speers and District United Church held their annual White Gift Sunday and Christmas program Dec. 12. The gifts collected during the service will be sent to Interval House in North Battleford.

The church service was conduced by Rev. Gail Wensley and the Sunday School and other children performed the Christmas story. Those taking part were the Attrux, Moore, Jones, Jackson, Oliver, Lafeniere and Thomas families. After the service, a potluck supper was served by the church ladies.

A program was held after the tables were taken down and chairs set up. Some of the people taking part in the program were Colleen Wicks, Marion Wahlberg, Ruth Foster, Rob and Diane Jones, April Lafeniere, Kendra Lafeniere, Ashley Boyko, Amber Jackson, Sara Jones, Megan Jones, Gillian Jackson and Speers United Church Choir led by Colleen wicks.

Games for preschoolers were led by Jade Boyko, while Diane Jones led games for those six and under and Marlene MacDonald entertained the older children. Games for adults were led by Sara Jones. Christmas carols were directed by Colleen Wicks. Rob Jones was MC for the evening and Diane Jones was the pianist. Candy bags were given out by Colleen Wicks to the children and oranges were given to the congregation.

The Gospel Fellowship Church in Hafford hosted the annual ecumenical church service Dec. 18 with the Speers United Church, Lutheran, Ukrainian Catholic, Ukrainian Orthodox and Roman Catholic congregations taking part. Every church had a representative light the unity candle and read scripture and a prayer. Those taking part from Speers and District United were Mary Linnel, Sara Jones and Rev. Gayle Wensley.

A few members of the Speers United church went to the Oasis senior home Dec. 14 to sing a few Christmas songs for the residents. Dec. 17, Sheila and Delbert Miller, owners of the home, hosted a Christmas party for the residents and their families with Colleen Wicks, April Lafeniere, Norman Wicks, Phyllis Cunningham and Howard Bulmer playing and singing Christmas songs.

Approximately 70 people attended the Christmas jam session in the Speers Recreation centre Dec. 17 from 2 to 8 p.m. with 24 musicians making music. A delicious turkey supper with all the trimmings was served by the Recreation Centre Committee. There were door prizes donated by local businesses and individuals. A 50/50 draw was won by Esther Laviolette. Raffle prizes were won by Esther Laviolette, Jeanette Artoyka and Lois Peters.

All the musicnas received a small gift in appreciation of thier musical ability.
