I can hardly believe we are nearing the end of May. Of course, the unseasonable weather doesn't help the mind and body recognize spring or pending summer. Mix that with the surprise of "cold core" funnel clouds warned of and spotted in our area May 15, makes a person wonder what's up for weather this summer? However, in spite of what we perceive as much moisture judging by muddy roads and such - don't ever "assume" because you know what that means. There are still some very dry material on top of the ground that can ignite easily so please don't throw cigarette butts out the window or burn things unnecessarily that may get away on you.
The long weekend was full of the sound of lawn mowers and the sight of bikes, walkers, yard rakers, gardeners and all the sights and sounds of upcoming summer. However, the local fire department did have one small fire to attend to on Saturday afternoon, May 17.
Next weekend Unity Western Days is upon us. The weekend will be full of action with the Friday night citizen of the year banquet, social and hat sale for the celebrity bullriding event. Saturday night's cabaret is always a hit. Sunday there is a pancake breakfast and cowboy church service followed by another rodeo performance, which will include crowning this year's rodeo queen.

As part of Police Week, the RCMP members were at both elementary schools for a friendly soccer match, although the session at UPS was a little longer as neither side was willing to settle for "a tie." In addition, the RCMP staged a mock hostage scenario May 13 that certainly drew some attention as multiple police units and camouflage personnel took to a cordoned section of Unity to participate.
May 26 you can head to the Baptist Church for a 7 p.m. concert featuring the African children's choir. There is no charge to attend but rather a free will offering as your support can help this non profit humanitarian relief organization that helps Africa's most vulnerable.
Three families from our area are taking part in the "Gutsy Walk" fundraising event to help raise funds for Crohn's and Colitis. The Bonogofskis, the Tuscherers and the Basts have all experienced first-hand the effects of these diseases and ask for your support. You can also help by donating blood at the next blood donor clinic in Unity this coming August.

Athletes to advance from here will attend the district event in North Battleford aiming to earn a berth at provincial track and field the first weekend in June. Principal Maureen Robertson is retiring at the end of June. She will be missed by fellow staff and the students of UCHS. A retirement afternoon will be held on Friday, May 23, from 2:30 - 4:30 p.m. The program will begin at 3:15 p.m. in the UCHS junior gym, so please use the junior doors. Grad ecumenical church service is set for May 29 at St. Peter's Church.
May 15, UCHS hosted Holocaust survivor, Dr. Eva Olsson. Her story of surviving the ultimate bullies and her message of hate breeding evil was powerful. You could have heard a pin drop in that gym with both UCHS and McLurg High School in attendance. At 88, she never took a seat once and she looked right at her audience when asking them to raise their hands if they have ever used the word "hate," or if they had ever been bullied. She told the students bystanders to Hitler enabled him to become who he was, murdering more than one million Jewish people in Europe, many of them women and children. Look her up. She has an incredible story.
Unity Public School track and field meet is May 30 with June 2 being the alternate date in case of inclement weather. Field trips are on the agenda for June.
