Last year at this time I was celebrating our 25th wedding anniversary my, how time flies. Happy 26th anniversary to my husband, Dave.

We were worried for our farmer friends when the long weekend brought rain, however the subsequent winds, although annoying to some, dried things up and had swathers and combines rolling again before the weekend was over.

School is back. Parents and children of UPS don't forget the welcome back pancake breakfast Sept. 7. UCHS will hold their welcome week activities the third week back starting with a pajama day and brunch Sept. 18. Formal day and picture day is Sept. 19 and Sept. 20 is school colour day, burger sale, pep rally and the first football game at 2 p.m. That week wraps up Friday with jersey day, the school's participation in the Terry Fox run, the annual chili cook-off and the Warriors girls' volleyball tournament.

The annual Fun Day of Golf is Sept. 8. This year's Saturday event is again a fundraiser for the UFC (Unity Facilities Committee), working hard for their fundraising goals for the new ground floor hall and swimming pool. There will be nine hole-in-one prizes worth over $135,000 plus $100 per hole for closest to the pin. Also planned are a chipping contest and putting contest.

Kicking off youth football is the fifth and final Z Bowl, the flag football tournament for kids in Grades 2 - 8, also Sept. 8, starting at 3:30 p.m. at the UCHS football field. Then this Sunday Unity Minor Football will be starting up with registration beginning at 1:30 p.m. at Warrior Field. The annual Minor Football Day is slated for Sept. 29.

Next weekend, runners and walkers will be taking part in the third annual Candace Heitt Memorial Run. Registrations can be made by contacting Donna Boser at 228-2181 or Terra Heitt at 228-2532, or online at the new website, www.candaceheitt.com. Funds raised from this event are earmarked for the walking paths at the health centre to benefit patients and long term care residents, as well as anyone else who wishes to take advantage of an outside walk. A large portion of this path was completed recently for patients, health care workers and residents alike to enjoy.

As well as the new walking path in the large grassy area in front of the Unity hospital, another walking path has become a reality in town - in the large yard of Parkview Place.

Minor hockey registration took place Sept. 6 in the community centre and there was also an area set aside for the purchase and sale of used hockey equipment.

The Saskatchewan Literacy Council is holding a literacy conference at the Unity Community Resource Centre Sept. 15 from 9 - 4, for the cost of only $15, including lunch. Join us for an exciting day of creating new learning experiences for families and children. This interactive training is fun-filled for anyone who works with or has children.

Keep in mind this is municipal election time and nominations are now being accepted for both Catholic and public school division boards as well as surrounding RMs and local town council seats. Consider one of these positions as part of our civic duty.

Unity Credit Union once again stepped up as a community booster with $15,485 in matched donations to the Unity Health Care Foundation for computerized radiography.

It might be a ways off yet, but you want to get your tickets early for the sure sellout annual event Dance for the Health of It. Coffee row folks are excited at the entirely different Rider team that showed up for the Labour Day classic. There are various claims as to how and why this happened but either way it gives Rider fans in our province something to cheer about again. The big winds prevalent on the long weekend sparked debate on whether this is a result of tropical storms, global warming or just another weather cycle. There is much activity coming up in the community this month, so "rowers" will have plenty of topics to discuss ahead. ... So you see we keep busy in Unity with activities and wisdom from our friends on coffee row. Until next week ...
