Weddings, reunions and time to relax - what summer is all about

A funnel cloud formed over Meeting Lake Aug. 29.

Yes, the hummingbirds are feeding heavily, the crows are flocking, the grain is turning, swathers are working and school bells are ringing again. It must be fall.

It seems like a while since any Rabbit Lake News has been submitted and my critics have been on my case, but I guess I just got lazy and enjoyed summer a bit too much. Lots of people have been travelling to weddings and reunions and to the lakes. I guess that is what summer is all about.

You need to ask Crystal Wright about what it feels like to "grin and bear it". She is the only person I know who has actually hit a bear while pulling a camper.

First and foremost we send our condolences, albeit late, to the Buckingham and Schneider families on the passing of Elizabeth Buckingham Aug. 7.

Congratulations are in order to Russell Martens and Jacoba Fast on their marriage Aug. 10. Russell is the son of David and Marlene Martens. The wedding took place on the Martens' farm. It was a great day for a wedding and all accounts report a great time.

A week later Doug Haryung and Peg Lindsay were married on the shore of Reserve Lake. Guests were ferried in by horse-drawn means. The day was hot but everyone enjoyed a good dance at Meeting Lake Regional Park.

Somewhere between all that the seniors held a potluck supper for 23 people. Who says nothing happens here?

Although not in Rabbit Lake, about 150 descendants of the Succuccis, who settled in the Mayfair area in 1913, celebrated 100 years in the community.

Congratulations to all those who celebrated big events.

Rabbit Lake Days, sponsored by the Rabbit Lake and District Board of Trade, was Aug. 24. The day kicked off with a pancake breakfast, followed by various yard sales, a barbecued lunch sponsored by the Rabbit Lake Recreation Centre and, of course, a full tournament of bunnock. When the dust settled and the bones lay still, Leonard McNabb, Margaret McNabb, Carson McNabb and Aleah McNabb were declared the winners.

Congratulations go out to David Kowerchuk on his 60th birthday and to David and Bev Kowerchuk on their 40th anniversary. A party including supper and a dance was held Aug. 31 to celebrate both events. A good crowd was there and David and Bev hosted a really nice time.

The Rabbit Lake library is once again holding its fall bottle drive. A drop-off station is located in front of the library. The libraries in Speers, Mayfair and Rabbit Lake are all holding a Saskatchewan Culture Day Sept. 28. The timing is such that you can attend all three. Check out the posters.

We are sorry to be saying farewell to Chad Doell, pastor of the Hoffnungsfelder churches. Chad was with us for slightly over a year and has become involved in the community. He was a member of the Rabbit Lake Housing Authority as one example.

Autumn is definitely here. The campers have almost all headed home for the season, and the kids are all ready for a new school year. Good luck to all our students and thanks for the dedication of the teachers in organizing a new year.

Harvest has begun! Several fields have been swathed all ready and there are bales everywhere. A little south near Whitkow some fall crops are combined. We wish for a good harvest but even more we wish for a safe one.

Farmers report the crops should be good if the frost will hold off for a bit longer. The heat of August has been a Godsend.

Some farmers to the west, north and east of Rabbit Lake experienced the disappointment and frustration of a late summer hailstorm on the night of Aug 29. Not a drop of rain fell in the village but the dead calm after the oppressive heat told us something was amiss. Bill Paterson from Shady Bay photographed the funnel cloud that formed and then touched land north of Meeting Lake close to the Cozy Creek Campground and close to Frank Bulyaki's farm. Other than the hail no other damage was reported.
