Highways became a hazard in aheavy snow fall Tuesday. People travellingnear Paynton on Highway 16 were held up by the elements asvehicles hit the ditch. Paynton Fire Department and Maidstone RCMP were called out to assist motorists and get people back on the road.

Two semi trucks along with the tow truck on the scene to help, slid off the road into the ditch. The tow truck had come to a complete stop before slipping off the icyroad into the snow. Another two truck and Joey Mosher of the Paynton and District Fire Department. who came to the party with a farm tractor, pulled out theditched motorists and the other tow truck, clearing the highway for the long line of cars to pass safely.

By Tuesday morning Maidstone RCMP were reporting a dozen semis in the ditch between Lloydminster and North Battleford, and an additional six vehicles had rolled. At about 10 a.m. RCMP were advising drivers to avoid Highway 16, eight kilometres east of Maidstone. At that point east-bound traffic was backed up for over one kilometre and traffic was limited to one lane over the bridge in the area.

Paynton Library will be holding their annual pumpkin carving contest in the Paynton Gym. As usual, the contest starts around 4:30 p.m. after the kids get off the school bus followed by a squash inspired meal. This is a free event for Paynton and area residents and prizes will be given in all age categories. Pumpkins areavailable or you can bring yourown.Feel free to dress up. All ages and skill levels are welcome for some community bonding and just good old fashioned fun!
