I grew up in a great railroad community, "New York is big but this is Biggar" - only an hour away from where I reside now.
After high school, I trained at Saskatoon Business College. I then worked at Robin Hood as a teletype operator.
I married Bob Young in Biggar in 1961. We were stationed with the RCMP in Saskatoon, Regina, Colonsay and finally North Battleford, where we ended up on a farm in 1973. New to me, a town girl, I should have written a book on this experience.
Through these years I took time out to have a family of four- Rob, Shauna, Todd and Joel - going back occasionally to secretarial work and life guarding. I returned to the work force in 1979 at the Kinsmen Aquatic Centre. I retired last year in June from the new Co-op Aquatic Centre after 34 and a half great years.
We are still here in North Battleford 41 years later and now have seven wonderful grandchildren.
I began art classes in Regina in 1969, working in oils. When we moved to North Battleford I worked with Nora Krake, then joined the Battlefords Art Club. Art is something for your own enjoyment - sometimes it works, sometimes it's comical, but it doesn't matter, you just begin again. We've had great workshops with talented artists -Kevin Quinlan, Dean Bauche, Karen Richter, Graham Flatt and others - all giving you new insight into what you can accomplish with ideas from their experiences.
I now do most of my artwork in watercolour, the opposite technique to oils, because of the ease of transport. I also recently began an art form of doodling rectangles. It's fun, relaxing, and therapeutic.
Joining the Battlefords' Art Club is like joining a family, a very caring and helpful bunch when you have questions about your art piece. Take the plunge, I'm glad I did.
