Watch for children on the streets

However, optimism is abounding that this will only be a temporary delay and full swing harvest operations will now be nearly uninterrupted for this season. School is set to begin next week. These two events bring a flurry of activity to town, creating excitement and busyness in the town.

With schools back in action Sept. 4, this is a reminder for drivers to be mindful of travelling through school zones, especially those first days of school, when excited children rush to and from the school yard. UPS will hold their welcome back pancake breakfast Sept. 7. UCHS has their welcome week activities soon too, so watch for details on this.

Unity baseball player, Blake Robertson, who has had an outstanding baseball season being part of the provincial winning Lloyd AAA U15 Twins who advanced to nationals in Vaughn, Ont., as well as being part of the gold medal Sask. Summer Games team, is now in Winnipeg for the annual Prospect Series.

The bantam girls' Zone 7 team, which included several Unity players as well as Unity coach Brent Weber, competed in the Fall Ball Provincial Zone championships in Moosomin last weekend, with a third place finish. These two events bring to a close this year's ball season.

Congratulations to Kelsey Wildeman who secured a spot in her first year of university on the U of S ladies' softball team.

Remember the Unity Golf Club is hosting lunch time specials Tuesdays and Thursdays, with Wednesdays featuring barbecued beef or pork on a bun for only $4.

Also coming up for the golf course is the annual Fun Day of Golf, Sept. 8. This year's event is again a fundraiser for the UFC (Unity Facilities Committee) who are working hard in their fundraising efforts for the new ground floor hall and swimming pool. There will be nine hole-in-one prizes worth over $135,000 plus $100 per hole closest to the pin. Also in line are a chipping contest and putting contest. Registration can be made at Unity Golf Course, 228-3688, or calling Peter Gartner at 228-3847. Why not enter a team or call a UFC committee member to volunteer?

Runners and walkers are encouraged to register for the third annual Candace Heitt Memorial Run taking place Sept. 16. Registrations can also be made now by contacting Donna Boser at 228-2181 or Terra Heitt at 228-2532. Funds raised from this event are earmarked for the walking paths at the health centre to benefit patients and long term care residents, as well as anyone else who wishes to take advantage of the walk in nature.

Whether we are ready for the rink or not, registrations are now being taken at Ultra Sports and the town office for the pre-conditioning 3-on-3 hockey tournament starting Oct. 1. Please contact the town office at 228-2621 for more details. Minor hockey registration happens Sept. 6, starting at 6:30 p.m. in the community centre lobby. There will be an area set aside for the purchase and sale of used hockey equipment, with owners being responsible for their own sale items.

All activities such as hockey, gymnastics, football, dance, yoga, exercise classes, etc., have had their registrations or will soon begin their registrations for the fall season. Watch this column or posters around town for details on what is upcoming. Unity Karate Club, traditional Japanese martial arts training, has their registration night Sept. 5 at St. Peter's gym.

It is a sad weekend as Unity's retail sector loses another business. Long-time business, formerly Unity's Shop Easy Foods, now known as Unity Family Foods, had its last day yesterday. This follows the closing of the Fields' store earlier this year. Shopping local is a key to sustainability for small town businesses.

Congratulations to new Unity Travel Shoppe owners, Ed and Gwen Frantik, who took over effective last week from former owners Tim and Marie Lang. The location and phone number will remain the same.

Carrie Winterhalt will again be offering the Music For Young Children program in Unity. The program is set up for children as young as three and up, taught in small groups for kids interested in music, rhythm and instruments. Contact Carrie at 228-4467 for more details.

The Saskatchewan Literacy Council is holding a literacy conference at the Unity Community Resource Centre Sept. 15 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., for the cost of only $15, which includes lunch. Join us for an exciting day of creating new learning experiences for families and children. This interactive training is fun-filled for anyone who works with or has children.

It might be a ways off yet, but you want to get your tickets early for the sure sellout annual event, Dance for the Health of It. This group has raised a tremendous amount of money over the years to put back into our community and they are having fun and keeping fit. Watch for more details on this event upcoming Oct. 27. Coffee row folks are at a loss to describe this year's Rider season as there are no theories as to how a team can start 3-0 and quickly fade with five straight losses! And our weather can never be sidelined as it gives us such a variety of conditions each week that it is sure to spark theories on what was and what is to come. Harvest and back to school activity will soon take over the conversation table as well. ... So you see we keep busy in Unity with activities and wisdom from our friends on coffee row.
