Warriors in the thick of football season

There can just not be enough good words to say about this fall weather. After a milder than normal winter and a cool, wet spring, we braced for the worst.

There can just not be enough good words to say about this fall weather. After a milder than normal winter and a cool, wet spring, we braced for the worst. But Mother Nature smiled on us all summer and extended that smile into beautiful fall weather, still allowing shorts and flip-flops Sept. 28. But the big winds that blew in the evening of Oct. 1, and the weather predictions from the west, were saying our gorgeous fall weather might be on its way out.

UCHS Warriors football team hosted their last home game Sept. 28 with a victory over Spiritwood. They now hit the road until playoffs.

St. Peter's School is alive with activity heading into fall. Be sure to check out their school calendar.

Unity Public is heading into October full of events as well. You can check their website for upcoming activities.

Unity Minor Football held their annual Minor Football Day Sept. 29. This event saw games from all three divisions: Grades 2-3 flag, Grades 4-5 flag and Grades 6-8 tackle. Included in this weekend at Warrior Field was a pass, punt and kick contest. The weather was so fantastic it drew out good crowds as well as big smiles on all the players.

Minor hockey started a 3-on-3 hockey tournament Oct. 1. The Skills of Gold camp comes up Oct. 6 and 7. Sylvan Lake Hockey camp is coming up too.

Culture Days had a couple of events in Unity over the last weekend in September. On the Friday, local UCHS students Jonathon Neigum and Shelby Solomko joined Louise Robson, Tammy Lauinger and Leona Gumpinger and acted out a play written by Shelby depicting the good ole days of school, church, socials, dances and "being sweet for a girl." Saturday a belly dancing workshop was held at Chase Pilates studio in two sessions. Participants learned the cultural aspects as well as the health benefits of this activity.

The annual fall fair and trade show drew crowds. The balloon man was by far the most popular area on the floor with kids lined up by the dozens for a unique hat or toy. The fudge table may have been the second most popular area of the trade show. The Ag Society was pleased with a full house of tables. The Saturday morning pancake breakfast put on in partnership with Delta Co-op and Unity Credit Union was also well attended.

Delta Co-op and Unity Credit Union are once again partnering for a project. In recognition of upcoming Co-operatives Week and International Year of the Co-op celebrations, from Oct. 1 to 18, members can pick up game tiles at either Unity Credit Union or Delta Co-op to help them complete a slogan on their game card. A completed game card earns a chance to pick a key that could open a treasure chest filled with goodies.

The New Horizons Centre held a Century Club party Oct. 1, hosting a social for folks in the community 90 and over. Many are still active in the community.

Ticket deadline for the UFC steak and lobster dinner night is this weekend. Corporate tables are only $400 or $50 per individual tickets. The committee is always looking for volunteers. Call Nicole at 228-2621 to sign up.

KC Rescue is having a bottle drive, Oct. 9, starting at 6 p.m. Please have your recyclables ready in the driveway for pickup or you can take your recyclables to Sarcan and request the refund to go to KC Rescue.

Although some seats have been acclaimed there is still the mayor's seat being contested so be sure to find the information on your candidate of choice to help you make an informed decision for civic elections to be held Oct. 24.

Congratulations to JP Boser and family on the Century Family Farm Heritage Award given by the Saskatchewan Government. JP's parents, Anton and Caroline, set up their homestead on the family farm in 1909. The award was given in June 2012 and the family was home recently to erect the wooden sign.

Coffee row folks are still talking about those Riders; they never cease to surprise us. Another big game against another big team - their efforts at home against the B.C. Lions went into heart-stopping action in the fourth quarter, but they came out with a huge win! The NHL lockout is still a bone of contention amongst many with the ridiculous battle between players and owners over $3.3 billion. Civic elections will be discussed in the days leading up to our local election. There is much activity coming up in the community this month, so "rowers" will have plenty of topics to discuss ahead. So you see we keep busy in Unity with activities and wisdom from our friends on coffee row. Until next week ... Happy Thanksgiving, everyone!
