During the "Warm Up Winter" Christmas tree burning event, sponsored by the School Community Council at Neilburg Composite School Jan. 16, many children enjoyed playing on the hill out behind the building. These boys were especially enjoying themselves despite the darkness and the cold.

Sympathy is extended to the family and friends of Olwin Eileen Olsen who passed away in Saskatoon Jan. 6 at the age of 97. She was born at Esther, Alta. in May of 1915. Olwin had not lived in the Neilburg area for many years, however, she was responsible for the beginnings of the home economics program at Neilburg Composite School which she started in 1972. Her funeral service was held Jan. 14 from the Neilburg Community Hall.

The Neilburg School Community Council Warm Up Winter Festival was a roaring success. There was a fantastic turnout to roast hot dogs, toboggan and watch the fireworks. Weir's Veterinary Clinic, Jason Flicek and Karen Putnam made cash donations. Cindy at the Grab & Go donated the fireworks at cost, Brent Black and Ernie Ducherer set off the fireworks, Urlacher's provided the firecone, Carla Schmidt and Kim Putnam cut up the Christmas trees the community council members personally donated the hot chocolate, coffee and other food for the evening. The silver collection raised $269.07 to put towards expenses. If anyone is missing their wiener sticks from that evening there are quite a few unclaimed ones at the school office.

The SRC at Neilburg Composite School have several spring initiatives scheduled. Mrs. Kerr-Goodfellow reports anti-bullying t-shirts were ordered to be worn at an event to be held in April. These were sold to students for $5.25.

April 10 is anti-bulling day. The Canadian Red Cross Day of Pink is an initiative that provides students, staff and the larger community with the opportunity to discuss the impact of bullying and to learn how they can use their power to help create a safe and respectful school environment. On that day students, staff and community members wear pink shirts in solidarity to show that they are taking a stand against bullying.

Wednesday, Feb. 27 will be the School and Community Jail and Bail to raise funds for Telemiracle. Tuesday, March 26 is the tentative date for a high school spring dance if adult chaperones can be organized.

Just a quick reminder to recycle your old phonebooks and then call the school (306-823-4313) with the numbers you recycled. The SaskTel Pioneers program gives the school 10 cents per phonebook that is recycled. Numbers need to be in by the end of January.

At Easter 2014, Grade 10-12 students and their parents will have the opportunity to visit New York City on an educational tour. In the past few years, students from the school have travelled to Italy/Greece (2013), Kenya (2012) and Germany/Austria (2011) through EF tours. Students are now planning a six-day trip to New York at Easter in 2014. On the tour, students will experience the culture of New York including tours of Fifth Avenue, Lincoln Center, Radio City Music Hall, Times Square, the WTC memorial, and the Statue of Liberty, attending two Broadway shows, taking part in an Improv workshop and much more. The quoted cost for the trip is $2,730 for students and $3,000 for adults. The club will be holding a student and parent informational meeting in late February in the school library.

The school is looking for large or small pieces of clean foam such as in couch cushions.

Submit photos to the Neilburg Lakeland Library Community Calendar Photo Contest by May 10 during regular library hours or put photos in the book drop. Voting will be from May 14 to May 31. Remember to put your name and number on the back of your photo. The library annual meeting is March 20 at 8 p.m. Board members are needed. The board meets approximately seven times a year for 90 minutes.

Anyone interested in curling is urged to contact Tracy Goodfellow at 306-823-4588. The recreation board is looking for volunteers to work booth shifts this year. If you would like to help out, you can also contact Tracy.
